Call for Applications for Partial Master's Scholarship in Zanzibar's Blue Economy
Under “Exploring Low Carbon Pathways Potential of Electric Outboard Motors for Climate Resilient Society and Sustainable Ecosystems in the Blue Economy Agenda in Zanzibar: The Green Energy – Blue Economy (GeBe)” Research Project


Background:

The GeBe Research Project, funded by the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), is pleased to announce two partial MSc scholarship opportunities.

The project is implemented by Climate Action Network Tanzania (CAN-TZ) in collaboration with the First Vice President’s Office – Zanzibar, the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries – Zanzibar, the University of Dar es Salaam – Institute of Marine Sciences, and ENdep Ltd.

The overarching aim of the project is to generate and apply context-specific knowledge and innovations that accelerate the adoption of electric outboard motors as a low-carbon marine propulsion alternative in Tanzania.

Research Objectives:

  1. Assessment of the environmental status and economic benefits of electric outboard motors in marine tourism and transport sectors for ecosystem sustainability and climate resilience
  2. Explore the social dimensions of adopting electric outboard motors including gender setting and dynamics towards inclusive climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts.
  3. Analysis of the contribution of electric outboard motors to climate resilient efforts as part of the Nationally Determined Contribution targets.

General Conditions:

  • Number of positions: 2 (1 Female, 1 Male)
  • Duration: 7 months (starting November 2025)
  • Coverage: Research expenses only (tuition and living costs are not covered).
  • Eligibility: Open to students already enrolled in Tanzanian Universities (Zanzibar and Mainland) in MSc/MA program aligned with the project objectives.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Second year student who has completed coursework and passed with a GPA of 4.0 and above.
  • Have a concept note or research proposal with themes related to the project objectives and should conduct her/his study in Unguja, Zanzibar.

  • A copy of partial transcript showing the results for year 1 of the study
  • A Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Copies of academic credentials
  • Two recommendation letters
