Tanzania’s future to Net Zero is promising as the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Vice President’s Office (VPO) launched a ground-breaking project which will lay out the Foundations for Long Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) in Tanzania. When launching this project on Monday 26th August in Dodoma, Deputy PS Hon. Abdallah Hassan Mitawi emphasized that climate change has been a real issue especially in Tanzania as it affects weather patterns which leads to low yields in most areas of Tanzania. He emphasized that the LT-LEDS should incorporate all sectors' contributions and identify how to effectively utilize green energy potentials in Tanzania for Sustainable Development.

Realizing the role of the Blue Economy in Zanzibar, the project will also be launched today by the Principal Secretary of the First Vice President’s Office (FVPO) Hon. Maryam Juma Sadal in Zanzibar, allowing diverse inclusion of various stakeholders and sectors to understand the project scope and readily contribute to the laying foundation on the development of the LT-LEDS in Tanzania.

The LT-LEDS is a crucial step forward for Tanzania as we strive to achieve a sustainable and climate-resilient future. These strategies are not just about reducing emissions; they are about creating a roadmap for sustainable development that aligns with our national goals and global commitments.

LT-LEDS play a vital role in meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement, which calls for global efforts to limit temperature rise to well below 2°C, with an aim for 1.5°C. By adopting LT-LEDS according to the Paris Agreement Article 4.19, Tanzania is demonstrating its commitment to this international climate pact, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

Also as Tanzania is still on the road map to create the National Development Vision 2050 the LT-LEDS will align with it to effectively achieve this vision while ensuring that our development is low-carbon and resilient to climate impacts.

By laying the foundations for LT-LEDS, this project will enable Tanzania to better adapt to the inevitable impacts of climate change, safeguarding our ecosystems, communities, and economy for future generations.

This project is being implemented by the Vice President's Office on the mainland, the First Vice President's Office (FVPO) in Zanzibar, and the CAN Tanzania Consortium with generous financial support from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) through the 2050 Pathways Platform.
