Climate Action Network Tanzania (CAN Tanzania) continues its commitment to improve climate resilience and sustainable livelihood options with a recent beekeeping training held in Chuini, Zanzibar. This initiative is a part of the project "Strengthening the Contribution of Local Actors for a Climate Resilient Society in Zanzibar," aiming to improve resilience of community members through essential knowledge and skills in beekeeping and entrepreneurship.

During a two-day training on 10th and 11th March 2025, 55 members of the Chuini Conservation Group participated in sessions facilitated by experts from the Zanzibar Department of Forests. The sessions covered key topics such as bee species, hive management, harvesting techniques, financial management and value addition of bee products.

A significant highlight of the training was the handover of 30 beehives to the Chuini Conservation Group on March 12, 2025. The event was graced by Hon. Harusi Saidi Suleiman, Minister of State, Office of the First Vice President of Zanzibar in collaboration with the Permanent Secretary and the Director of Environment. The Minister appreciated CAN Tanzania’s efforts in supporting local communities to adapt to the effects of climate change. The minister assured continued government support to the initiatives, including the provision of beekeeping gears to the conservation group.

This initiative marks an important step towards livelihood diversification and environmental conservation in Chuini. By incorporating beekeeping into their practices, the Chuini Conservation Welfare Group can generate sustainable income while contributing to ecosystem restoration.
