As the 30th Conference of Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) approaches, Climate Action Network (CAN) Tanzania is intensifying its efforts to ensure that Tanzania's climate priorities are effectively represented on the global stage.
In a recent capacity-building workshop for media professionals held from October 22 to 24, 2025, in Morogoro, CAN Tanzania's Operations Manager, Boniventure Mchomvu, emphasized the significance of COP30 as a pivotal platform for Tanzania to advance its national and international climate agendas. He highlighted the country's commitment to over 12 goals aimed at engaging the global community on critical climate issues, including climate finance, loss and damage, gender and climate change, a just transition pathway, a global stocktake, environmentally friendly technologies, and scientific research focused on enhancing the resilience of affected communities. Mchomvu underscored the importance of collective action, stating, "Climate change knows no political boundaries; it is our collective responsibility to address it."
The workshop, organized by the Tanzania Media Foundation (TMF) in collaboration with Oxford Policy Management Institute (OPM) and supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and the Embassy of Switzerland in Tanzania, brought together 20 journalists from 13 regions across Tanzania. The training aimed to enhance the capacity of media professionals to produce high-quality climate change-related content before, during, and after COP30. This initiative will ensure that Tanzanians are well-informed about the nation's roles and responsibilities in the upcoming global climate negotiations.
Dastan Kamanzi, Executive Director of TMF, noted that the project aims to generate impactful climate change narratives that align with the discussions anticipated at COP30. He emphasized the need for timely and informative reporting to engage the public effectively.
The COP30 conference, scheduled to take place from November 10 to 21, 2025, in Belém, Brazil, serves as a crucial opportunity for Tanzania to amplify its voice in international climate negotiations. By showcasing national achievements in renewable energy projects, forest conservation, and gender-responsive climate strategies, Tanzania aims to contribute to the global discourse on sustainable development and climate resilience.
As COP30 approaches, CAN Tanzania remains committed to fostering informed public participation and advocating for policies that address the urgent challenges posed by climate change. Through collaborative efforts and strategic engagement, Tanzania seeks to play a leading role in shaping a sustainable and equitable global climate future.
